Week 2 - Day 4 - Activity 1

I chose to research someone called John Grant from Hawera who, before the war was a builder. He earned the Victorian cross because when his battalion attacked German machine gun positions him and another soldier rushed the guns by leaping into the centre and destroying it, he repeated this process again with another machine gun post.

In this activity I had to read about one person who got the Victorian cross and then write down some information about them.

  1. Hi Mataio

It's Allie again from the SLJ team!

You have chosen one of our great heroes to tell us about. John Grant was a very brave soldier who fought during the war for New Zealand.
He must have been so brace to attack the German machine gun post like he did.
We are lucky to have the soldiers that fought for us so that we can live in the peaceful world that we do today.
That's why it is important to pay respect to these soldiers on Anzac Day.
Have you been to dawn parade on Anzac Day before?

I go each year here in Greymouth and it is getting bigger and bigger each year as more younger people join in to show their respect.

    Great work once again Mataio.

    Until next time

    Allie :)

  3. Hi Mataio
I have enjoyed reading your SLJ posts. John Grant sounds like he really deserved to be awarded this medal. What a brave man! My great granddad won the medal just below the Victoria Cross called the Military Medal. He, like John Grant did a very brave thing in the war. I don't think I would be this brave. Keep working hard.

  4. Hi Mataio
Excellent job on finishing this summer learning journey activity. Your facts about John Grant are great. He was probably a very brave man. Do you know if he managed to survive the battle he was in? Keep up the amazing work Mataio!
